ACCELERATOR OPERATORS

Description: We are seeking operators for our proton linear (LINAC) and cyclotron accelerators that are used to produce radioisotopes and pharmaceuticals for medical applications. The work includes monitoring and control of complex electro-mechanical systems, periodic troubleshooting, maintenance and some equipment modifications. Operations can be around the clock, so shift work and some overtime are required. For students, shifts can be arranged around class schedules.

The accelerators are very complex systems that include computer based controls, high voltage, high current and radio frequency power supplies, as well as high vacuum systems, mechanical pneumatic target handling devices and temperature controlled “high flow” water cooling systems. Some of these systems become radioactive during operations and some work is thus required in radiation fields. However, we have comprehensive safety and monitor systems in place to protect employees from the risks of these electrical, mechanical and radiation hazards.

We work as a team and each operator is expected to bring specific-type skills to the team. Knowledge and experience in computer controls, electronic circuits and wiring, automated mechanical handling systems, water cooling systems and/or vacuum systems are all desired but not all required. Practical, hands-on, hard-working individuals are needed. The mental capacity to understand the entirety of a complex system and how each subsystem interacts with the whole is perhaps the most challenging part of the job.

This is an entry-level opportunity to work and gain experience with a variety of complex equipment. As knowledge and capability are demonstrated, individuals can progressively advance to Senior, Lead and Supervisor positions.

Requirements: Desired training includes technical certificates, associate degrees, engineering training or equivalent experience in electrical, electronic, computer controls, vacuum systems or mechanical systems. Military experience in any of these areas is a real plus and highly regarded.

How to Apply: If you’re interested in an Accelerator Operator position, value a strong sense of personal ownership, appreciate individual recognition and thrive on team success, we’d like you to use one of the following three methods to submit your resume and salary requirements or this downloadable employment application.
