Title: Accelerator Operator
Description: We are seeking operators for our proton linear accelerator (linac) and
cyclotrons in Denton, Texas. Our accelerators are used to produce radioisotopes for medical
applications. The work includes monitoring and control of complex electro-mechanical systems,
along with periodic troubleshooting, maintenance and equipment modifications. Operations can be
around the clock, so shift work and some overtime are required. For students, shifts can be
arranged around class schedules.
The accelerators are very complex systems that include computer based controls, high
voltage, high current, and radio frequency power supplies; high vacuum systems, mechanical pneumatic
target handling devices, and temperature controlled, high flow, water cooling systems. Some of
these systems become radioactive during operations, and some work is required in radiation fields.
We have comprehensive safety systems in place to protect employees from the risks of these
electrical, mechanical and radiation hazards.
We work as a team and each operator is expected to bring some skills to the team. Knowledge and
experience in computer controls, electronic circuits and wiring, automated mechanical handling
systems, water cooling systems, vacuum systems are all desired, but not all required in each
individual. Practical, hands-on, hard-working individuals are needed. The mental capacity to
understand the entirety of a complex system and how each subsystem interacts with the whole is
perhaps the most challenging part of the job.
Requirements: Desired training includes technical certificates, associate degrees,
engineering training or equivalent experience in electrical, electronic, controls, vacuum or
mechanical systems. Military experience in any of these areas is well regarded.
Operators start as “second” operators working under the direction of a “lead” operator and/or
engineers. Starting pay rate is $15/hour. As knowledge and capability are demonstrated, individuals
can advance to lead operator positions. This is an opportunity to work on and gain experience with
a wide variety of complex equipment.

Candidates will be expected to quickly familiarize themselves with isotope separation and purification processes in a cGMP production environment. Duties include; hot cell operations, quantitative radiochemical separations, radio-analytical measurements, accelerator target preparation, production related R&D/method development and validation.
Requirements: Candidates must possess a minimum B.S. In Chemistry Preference will be given to candidates with industry experience, but chemists with appropriate wet/analytical chemistry skills outside the industry will be considered. Full radiation worker training will be provided. Candidates must be willing to accommodate shift patterns of work.
